HilverdaKooij leads the global market in selecting, breeding and propagating Dianthus, Limonium and Alstroemeria varieties, and also breeds, selects and propagates Helleborus, Echinacea, Gypsophila and Scabiosa cultivars. The large scale of the company’s operations and its network of locations in the Netherlands and abroad allows HilverdaKooij to provide its customers everywhere in the world with a complete assortment of starting material for producing cut flowers and pot plants.
After acquiring P. Kooij & Zonen (a carnation breeding and propagating company) in 2008, the name of the company was changed from Hilverda to HilverdaKooij. The acquisition resulted in a strong company specialising in supplying producers of cut and pot carnations with starting material. By now, the company has added several varieties of cut flower crops such as the spectacular Dianthus barbatus hybrids in the Sparkz® series. The new Gypsophila series, Zinzi®, and the most recently introduced Helleborus Magnificent Bells® complete this exceptional assortment of cut flower crops.
The assortment of pot plant crops has also been increased in the last few years. In addition to Sunflor® carnations, HilverdaKooij also breeds and propagates Alstroemeria Inticancha®, Dianthus Beauties®, Helleborus Snow Crystal® (Niger), Helleborus Winterbells® (Interspecific) and Orietalis, all varieties propagated by tissue culture.
The HilverdaKooij R&D Department is developing new varieties in several product groups. HilverdaKooij possesses extensive expertise in the area of traditional breeding techniques but it naturally also applies modern breeding methods. These have already led to groundbreaking results and a very successful development of new varieties.
To maximise efficiency, HilverdaKooij decentralised some of its operations. Having production located nearer to its sales markets has meant substantial savings in energy demands and transport costs. This is also an advantageous development with regard to sustainability and continuity from which buyers can benefit. Today, HilverdaKooij has production facilities in The Netherlands, Colombia, Kenya, India and China.
